Understand what chromatographic purity and molecular-mass analysis can—and cannot—show about a research material.

Different methods, different questions

High-performance liquid chromatography separates detectable components under defined conditions. The relative area of chromatographic peaks may be reported as purity, but the result depends on the method, detector, integration, sample preparation, and compounds the method can detect.

Mass spectrometry measures mass-to-charge signals and can support molecular identity. A matching mass does not by itself establish chromatographic purity, sterility, concentration, or suitability for a particular experiment.

Evaluate the complete record

A useful report states the method, sample identifier, date, result, units, and acceptance criteria. Chromatograms and spectra provide more context than a result copied into a marketing graphic.

  • Confirm the reported units and basis
  • Distinguish identity evidence from purity evidence
  • Avoid extrapolating beyond the method scope
